Musk has fathered fourteen children, one of whom died as an infant.[388] He had six children with his first wife, Canadian author Justine Wilson, who he met while attending Queen's University in Ontario, Canada; they married in 2000.[389] In 2002, their first child Nevada Musk died of sudden infant death syndrome at the age of 10 weeks.[390] After his death, the couple used in vitro fertilization (IVF) to continue their family;[391] they had twins in 2004, followed by triplets in 2006.[391] The couple divorced in 2008 and have shared custody of their children.[392][393] The elder twin he had with Wilson came out as a trans woman in 2022. She then obtained a court order to change the name on her birth certificate to "Vivian Jenna Wilson". She also had the gender on her birth certificate changed to "female".[394] She adopted her mother's surname because she no longer wished to be associated with Musk.[394]
Musk began dating English actress Talulah Riley in 2008.[395] They married two years later at Dornoch Cathedral in Scotland.[396][397] In 2012, the couple divorced, before remarrying the following year.[398] After briefly filing for divorce in 2014,[398] Musk finalized a second divorce from Riley in 2016.[399] Musk then dated Amber Heard for several months in 2017;[400] he had reportedly been "pursuing" her since 2012.[401]
